Description


Organization

In 1996 then Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the City of Boston established the Timothy Smith Fund for Old Roxbury using Timothy Smith’s gift. The fund established technology and computer learning centers – now called Timothy Smith Technology Labs (TSTLs) in non-profit organizations located in Roxbury. In 2003, the Timothy Smith Network (TSN) was established as a not-for-profit organization to administer the Timothy Smith Fund.

The Timothy Smith Network (TSN) continues to be committed to supporting the creation of an inclusive technology workforce by providing demographics that are underrepresented in technology with the tools necessary to compete for careers in 21st century tech-focused industries.

Timothy Smith Network launched the Boston Design Academy (BDA) in 2018, in partnership with the City of Boston, Microsoft, Boston Public Library, and Boston Public Schools (BPS) to provide BPS high school students with the opportunity to explore potential career pathways through project-based learning and collaborations with the institutions, companies and individuals that drive Boston’s innovation ecosystem. Students are provided with supplies, tools, and training to enhance their understanding of applied science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).


Job Announcement

Timothy Smith Network is looking for an innovation manager to supervise, structure, and teach TSN’s wide range of programs including Boston Design Academy and LEGO Robotics. The Innovation Manager will be responsible for tracking the delivery and overall success of each program as well as supervising program partners and keeping management informed on program progress.

The Innovation Manager must stay up to date on the most effective methods for teaching basic and advanced STEAM concepts to develop and sharpen student’s knowledge and understanding of product design theory, coding and programming languages for LEGO Mindstorms and Sphero devices, 3D modeling techniques, leveraging local resources (e.g., libraries, companies, schools, makerspaces) or improvised home labs to carryout themed lessons.

The intent of TSN programs is to aid students from underrepresented and under resourced backgrounds in overcoming barriers to envisioning careers in technology. Our goal is to bridge the digital divide and we aim to find a like-minded individual.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and plan programs from start to completion including deadlines, milestones, curriculum, technology requirements, assessments, and marketing and recruitment strategies
  • Initiate and set goals for programs according to the strategic objectives of the organization
  • Develop budgets and program operational systems
  • Devise evaluation strategies to monitor performance and determine the need for improvements
  • Discover ways to enhance efficiency and productivity of procedures and people
  • Apply change, risk and resource management principles when needed
  • Read reports prepared by program participants and partners to determine progress
  • Ensure program operations and activities adhere to legal guidelines and internal policies
  • Keep senior management informed with detailed and accurate progress reports and presentations
  • Ensure the implement the front end of innovation process to identify and reach decisions on candidate platform and transformation technologies/partners
  • Champion and achieve buy in from R&D leadership for targeted focus areas for scouting and platform technologies.
  • Works on complex goals that require effort to define and Responsible for defining and leading the project to deliver the solution.
  • Provide regular updates on activities and learnings across the R&D, Operations, and Marketing teams at a schedule agreed upon with R&D
  • Work with Social Media Manager to create content to advertise and recruit programs and to post articles and information for community to connect with additional STEAM


Programmatic Responsibilities

  • Timothy Smith Network runs on a July to June fiscal calendar. The Innovation Manager is responsible for lead instruction and/or project management of the following programs.
  • Summer Session: July through September

    • Program Management: Boston Design Academy: Digital Design Program
    • Program Management: Timothy Smith Network Programs
  • Fall Session: October through December
    • Lead Instruction: Digital Literacy Program
    • Program Management: Boston Design Academy: Alumni Mentorship Program

  • Spring Session: March through May
    • Lead Instruction: Digital Literacy Program

Requirements

  • Ed./BA diploma in education, educational technology, or a relevant field; MSc/MA preferred
  • STE, DLCS, or MTEL licensure preferred
  • Proven experience writing and developing curriculum and teaching experiential subjects to elementary through high school students
  • Proven experience working with students in urban school districts
  • Thorough understanding of project/program management techniques and methods
  • Understanding of creating and tracking performance evaluation rubrics and key metrics
  • Outstanding knowledge of data analysis, reporting and budgeting
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office and program management software (e.g. MS Planner, Asana, MS Project etc.)
  • Knowledge of coding and programming languages a plus
  • Strong interest in learning advanced technology education software and hardware products
  • Acumen in building and sustaining strategic partnerships
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • An analytical mindset with great problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with use of various computers, design equipment, and associated (List of commonly used software and hardware below)

Salary Range

Timothy Smith Network offers competitive compensation, with a salary range between $65,000 and

$70,000; a benefit package that includes annual vacation, sick, and personal time; more than 10 paid holidays; individual health, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with contribution match, and more.
